Owens Valley to Death Valley Back Country Byway
This scenic byway is in east-central California south of Bishop, near the Nevada state line. Western access is east of Big Pine off CA 168. The byway travels southeast to the northern entrance of Death Valley National Park. The 63-mile byway follows Death Valley Road, which is a county maintained road. The first 32 miles are paved; the remaining is graded dirt. You can safely drive this route in a two-wheel drive, high-clearance vehicle. Owens Valley to Death Valley is usually passable all year but may close temporarily after heavy rain.
Pacific Coast Highway
Pacific Coast Highway follows the coastline of the Pacific Ocean in west-central California. It travels between Monterey and San Simeon on CA 1, a two-lane paved road suitable for all types of vehicles. The byway is 95 miles long and is usually open year-round. Fog in the summer can make driving hazardous.
Palms to Pines Scenic Byway
Palms to Pines scenic byway is in southern California near Palm Springs. The byway follows CA 74 and CA 243 for 67 miles between Banning and Palm Desert. Both state highways are two-lane paved roads suitable for all types of vehicles. Both are generally open year-round.
Rim of the World Scenic Byway
Rim of the World is in southwest California near San Bernardino. The byway begins at Mormon Rocks Fire Station on CA 138, just west of I-15. It travels southeast following CA 138, CA 18, and CA 38 and ends in Redlands. The state highways are usually open all year and are two-lane paved roads suitable for all types of vehicles. Rim of the World is 115 miles long.
Saline Valley Back Country Byway
Saline Valley scenic byway is located in east-central California, near the Nevada border. Southern access is southeast of Keeler off CA 190. The byway travels north to the junction of Owens Valley to Death Valley scenic byway. Saline Valley is 82 miles long and follows Saline Valley Road, which is mostly a county-maintained graded dirt road. Ten miles of the byway are paved. The road is subject to temporary closure after periods of heavy rain, otherwise it is generally open year-round. A two-wheel drive, high-clearance vehicle is required to safely travel the route.
