Bitter Springs Trail Back Country Byway

Bitter Springs Trail is about 45 miles northeast of Las Vegas in southeast Nevada. It can be accessed from I-15 by taking Exit 75 and then traveling east. The byway is 28 miles long and follows Bitter Springs Road, which is a single-lane dirt road that requires a two-wheel drive, high-clearance vehicle. The byway usually remains open year-round.

California Trail Back Country Byway

The California Trail scenic byway is in northeast Nevada about 75 miles northeast of Elko. It can be accessed in either Thousand Springs or Jackpot on US 93. California Trail is 76 miles long and follows Elko County Roads C765, C763, C761, and C762. All the roads are gravel and are suitable for passenger cars except under adverse weather conditions. The byway is generally open May through October.

Fort Churchill to Wellington Back Country Byway

Fort Churchill to Wellington is in west-central Nevada ten miles east of Carson City. The eastern terminus is near Fort Churchill State Historic Park off US 95A. The byway heads west to Dayton and then south to end at the junction with NV 208 near Wellington. It follows NV 2B, Como, Sunrise Pass, and Upper Colony Roads for a total of 67 miles. The roads vary from relatively smooth gravel to rough dirt roads. The graveled sections are mostly two lanes while the rougher segments are single lane with steep grades. A four-wheel drive vehicle is necessary to complete the byway; a two-wheel drive, high-clearance vehicle can travel most of the route. Most of the byway is passable year-round. The portion through the Pine Nut Mountains is usually closed in winter.

Gold Butte Back Country Byway

Gold Butte is in southeast Nevada about 80 miles northeast of Las Vegas. It begins south of Mesquite off NV 170 and travels south to the ghost town of Gold Butte. The byway is 62 miles long and follows Gold Butte Road, splitting at Devil's Throat. The first 24 miles follow a narrow paved road suitable for passenger vehicles. Traveling east of Devil's Throat, the road is a relatively smooth gravel road that is also suitable for passenger cars. The segment heading west from Devil's Throat is a lightly maintained dirt road that requires a high-clearance, two-wheel or four-wheel drive vehicle. Gold Butte Back Country Byway remains open year-round.

Lake Tahoe East Shore Drive

Lake Tahoe East Shore Drive is in west-central Nevada about 15 miles west of Carson City. It follows the eastern shore of Lake Tahoe between the cities of King's Beach and South Lake Tahoe. The byway is 30 miles long and follows NV 28 and US 50. Both highways are two-lane paved roads suitable for all types of vehicles. They usually remain open all year.

Lamoille Canyon Road

Lamoille Canyon Road scenic byway is located in northeast Nevada approximately 20 miles southeast of Elko. The byway begins near Lamoille off NV 227. It travels south through the Humboldt National Forest to the Roads End Picnic Area. Travelers will need to retrace the route back to NV 227. Lamoille Canyon Road is 12 miles long and follows FSR 660, which is a two-lane paved road suitable for all types of vehicles. It is generally open May through October.

Mount Wilson Back Country Byway

Mount Wilson Back Country Byway is 90 miles south of Ely in eastern Nevada. Northern access is off US 93 at the Pony Springs Rest Area. The byway travels southeast and forms an open loop drive back to US 93, near the town of Pioche. Mount Wilson is 62 miles long and follows County Roads 441, 440, 431, and 430, BLM Road 4045, and NV 322. The roads are a combination of paved and gravel roads that can be safely driven in a two-wheel drive, high-clearance vehicle. Mount Wilson is open May through October; it can become impassable after heavy rain.

Pyramid Lake Scenic Byway

Pyramid Lake is 30 miles north of Reno in west-central Nevada. It lies entirely within the Pyramid Lake Indian Reservation and follows NV 445, NV 446, and NV 447. The state highways are two-lane paved roads suitable for all vehicles. Pyramid Lake National Scenic Byway is 40 miles long and remains open year-round.

Red Rock Canyon Back Country Byway

Red Rock Canyon is in southern Nevada about 20 miles west of Las Vegas. It can be reached from Las Vegas by traveling west on NV 159. The byway is 13 miles long and follows Red Rock Canyon Road, which is a one-way, paved road suitable for all vehicles. Red Rock Canyon remains open year-round.
